(btw, all the compost I have in the bags from them - any good to use elsewhere? - can I bung it back in a compost bin?)

Well I have done the deed and have nothing to show for it. I gave one pot a tentative furtle and found one solitary spud about the size of a pigeon egg. I have also just googled 'Smile' and they are maincrop so realise I must wait a while longer. Ah well! lets hope they are worth waiting for

How best to furtle in growing bag kits? I planted mine late February I think so i imagine the first earlies should be about ready?
Am i best to have a reach around first and see what I can feel or empty out the whole bag?
Can you do anything with leftover compost from these when they are emptied?

I planted my earlies in on 7 March - have avoided most of the frost damage (one Lady Christl plant has died a horrible death!) and whilst trying my very best NOT to dig in and have a rummage this weekend, I pulled the rake across the side of the mounds to get rid of some weeds.....and there was a tiny little tattie.....so I rummaged, obviously (surely that was a green light to do so if ever there was one??!!).....and got about 15 little new potatoes (Home Guard).......YAY.....but I must admit, the frost has put the spuds back and I'm going to leave them another couple of weeks yet before I go back for a serious attack as there was not much else going on in the mounds after i'd finished burgling!Last edited by LolaLou; 20-05-2010, 11:39 AM.
