Leeks/Onions

Hi again, we have finally (friday 9th feb) sown our leek and onion seeds.

2 very large trays of aprox 300 Musselburgh seeds.
A medium tray of Ailsa Craig (aprox half a packet)
And a packet of Unwins Exhibition Onion seeds.

We do not have a green house so the dining room serves as a nursery, we have a 4 tier mini greenhouse (Derek calls it the Birdcage) which we bring inside to start things off as its rather cold at present, and the wee little darlings need the warmth

Its a good job we like leeks and onions as there are only the 2 of us.
Storage is going to be the main problem as my spare bedroom is hosting the chitting spuds, and if any one needs to stay they will share the bed with the spuds.
As for the shed well the less said about that the better, you couldn't swing a cat in there with the amount of tools etc, never mind store veg.

I blame it all on the husband me.

How many of the bloomin leeks you gona transplant? You must have a very large plot Mind you the musselburg are very good at keeping in the ground over winter right up until spring.

Anyone know why my leeks didn't fatten up this year? They've only got to pencil thickness at best. Perhaps they went in too late? (the first lot got eaten by maggots)

Hi muckman, hopefully we will plant out all those that thrive, last year we did 100, and that was in a very small area aprox 12' x 4', we like small leeks (not baby ones) about 1.5" - 2" max, so we sow them about 6" apart and 6"-9" between rows, they grew really well and tasted excellent, we especially like the green leaves as well as the white, they have so much flavour, gosh just the thought of eating them makes me dribble.

Waiting to read responses to this Two Sheds as mine are the same. Bought them pencil thick from ebay and planted them after my spuds came out. One or two are just about eating size but the rest are nothing to write home about. First go at growing leeks so I have no previous experiences to compare them to.
