  • Celeriac/lettuce spacing

I haven't grown celeriac before, though I love to eat it. My seedlings are about 2 1/2 inches high, though still very fragile.

I plan to fit a few into my little kitchen garden bed, and the rest at the lottie. Loads of space at the lottie, but was planning on intercropping the celeriac with Marvel of Four Seasons lettuce at home.

What's the tightest spacing I could get away with do you think?

No less than 30cm I reckon. They will need leaf space to make those huge roots, something I have yet to achieve. What's the secret? Lots of watering?

I'm planting my celeriac out this afternoon and intending on doing it at approx 12" centres but haven't grown it before so not sure if that's right.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

It's what I have done. But then I haven't grown big roots, so this may be wrong, however I think my problem is with the heavy clay which dries out to concrete in the summer. Celeriac needs a lot of water and feeding.

We're a bit on the silty side so I'm adding plenty of organic matter to help out.

I'd buy that spacing for kohl rabi as I harvest it at golf ball size but no way for celeriac which they seem to be talking about as if it's a brassica on that link - mind you I did the same the other week when I was getting confused as to what thread I was on and was talking about sprouts on a celeriac thread!

They talk about 12 inch spacing and 14 inches apart here. Celeriac spacing

                  Thanks all.

Alison, how big are your seedlings? I think mine are too fragile to go out yet, but ideally want them in the ground in the next week or so.

Mine were 12" apart, and didn't get very big at all last year. They needed more water than I could give them too

I put mine out at 12" last year and they grew ok. I wouldnt go any closer than that though. Just in case they romp away and get nice and fat.

They vary a bit in size but probably an average of about 4 or 5" tall.
