for a bit of a project im trying an edible hanging basket. ive bought 3 tom plants coz i dont know how succesful its gonna be. 1 yellow tumbling tom and 2 red. my 2 red plants are still growing straight tho, will they eventually bend over? and also do i have to pinch out the side shoots like you do with cordons?

Mine are also straight but expect them to hang over the side when long enough. I don't think you need to do any pinching out but others will let you know for sure.Cheers

Definitely no pinching out and they tend to start bending over when the fruits start forming as the weight helps out there! They do get pretty big though, made the mistake the first year of putting 3 in one basket and it just wasn't big enough. Put 2 in these days but might try just the one some time to see how that does.

which size of basket are you using ? I have seen toms basket at the local diy store and they had 3 plants in... but they looked a bit short on space...
mine are quite small so maybe only 1 tom and 1 basil in each basket...Comment

I used 2 plants per standard size basket last year and it was too crowded, this year I have one plant per basket. Like to add I have my first fruits forming so chuffed with that just hoping the blight stays off.Comment

I also have previously used 2 plants but last year used only one per basket, the plants looked healthier and the yield was much better.Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.Comment

I have the same toms but have planted 4 in a 30x30cm tall planter with some other plants - am worried they will be too crowded now. I am hoping the dangling effect will look nice over the edges instead of in a basket. Its an experiment!Comment

Is it an issue?
Hello, my first post here and my first time growing tomatos.
Ten weeks ago I planted tumbling tom seeds and watched them grow rather quickly. Two weeks ago I planted them out when they were a 8" tall. Two are in a wall planted and two are in a hanging basket. They have been doing well and are upto a foot tall now.
As they are tumbling toms I was expecting them to get to a height where they would slowly lean over under their own weight.
This morning I went outside and found that the largest plant in my wall planter had bent right over after being stood upright yesterday. The leaves on this and the plant sharing the planter have both got curled up leaves. There are no bugs and no discolouration. I did give them a good drink last night after a very dry day. Could I have over watered them?
I haven't watered them today and brought the planter into the conservatory, trying to warm them up if that was the case.Comment
