Can anyone tell me why my cabbages are growing so big. I planted out some minicole a month ago. They are now 22" high with 9" wide leaves. I have grown them before on a different part of the plot and they were nothing like this size. This bit of plot was only started last year. It was grass which I covered in cardboard and plastic and grew potatoes underneath. After the pots I dug over and grew mustard green manure which was later dug in. Plot has been covered with straw over winter and I put the cabbages in as I needed to get them out.

I wish that was the case. The plants I'm talking about are in my back garden but I also share an allotment and the ones there from the same seed packet, sown at the same time, planted out at the same time are 7" tall and showing every sign of being the compact ball-headed cabbage they are supposed to be, so I'm still looking for an explanation as to why the others are so large.History teaches us that history teaches us nothing. - Hegel

If it is excessive nitrogen how did that come about and what can be done about it? I have not noticed any UFO's but we do frequently get woken up by the Heron(allegedly) that flies around the area screaming.History teaches us that history teaches us nothing. - Hegel

I don't think bigger is better is necessarily true. I selected these minicole because they are compact ballheaded cabbage and I'm trying to maximise the use of small spaces. I have used mustard as a green manure in other areas and have not seen a similar result so I'm not convinced that is the reason.History teaches us that history teaches us nothing. - Hegel
