      bolting onions

Almost all of mine are affected. They are overwintered, and were looking sooo goood till this week. Last winter they all rotted, the year before they were tiny, and this year they looked fantastic. Until now. Is it worth it?

This thread is interesting for me as my white onions have just bolted and the red ones in the same bed planted at the same time and bought from the same wilkos at the same time haven't. The same happened last year. I am not going to bother with white onions again. I have far more success with shalots.
I have cut the flower stems out and am pulling the white ones as needed. They are a bit milder too so they have been really good on pizzas and raw in salads

More than the usual amount of mine have bolted; both red and white....mainly I think due to the very cold winter and the prolonged dry spell.

Onions bolt as a reaction to cold weather: even though it shows as bolting in warm dry weather, the process started back when they received a cold spell. I expect mine to do it any minute: I've been away from the plot for only 3 days and the chard and parsnips have sent up flower shoots

You can buy "heat treated" red onion sets that are less inclined to bolt,I grew them last year.Mine didn't bolt, but they didn't grow much either,I've had bigger shallots, but they were delicious.
Oh and we are still eating them.
