large marrow tips

Foolishly I have challenged a fellow allotmenteer to a marrow contest. Any tips on growing a large marrow would be appreciated. The competition will be really tough. Do you just grow the first fruit that sets on and on and on, or is there timing involved ie. develop one fruit 6 weeks prior to the weigh in date? Ta very much.

I think this is a boy thing. We were always told that size wasn't important!

I would guess you just keep the first one growing, thinking about things like blackberries, the first fruit at the tip is always the biggest.

Hi ian good luck mate ,if you can get hold of the wool from round the sheeps bum eeek ! put it in a netted bag and hang it in s barrel of water, that makes a good liquid fert, feed it that and your sure to win.

I take it Muckman that tip has nothing to do with where you are from . Being from Leicester, we do have names for Derby folk you know. lol.

The easiest way is to do as Seth on Emmerdale did i.e. Take a core out of the bottom take out the seeds and fill it full of nails. Replace the core and superglue into position.
You will probably get found out but it will be worth it to see the look on your competitors face at the weigh in!

Plant courgettes, have daughter go into hospital so you have to look after grandchildren, return to plot 5 weeks later and you have giant marrows! Seriously though, restrict the number of fruits per plant (I would think each plant could support 2 good ones). If they have been planted on good fertile soil (preferably enriched with compost or manure to retain water) you should have no problems. If the weather is really dry when fruits are growing give additional water

I thank you all, I will look into sheeps wool from its nether regions, plan to steer clear of courgettes, as large courgettes have caused controversies in the past on our allotment's show day! I'm itching to get started, and I will probably be itching some more if I get some of that sheep wool
