What is your opinion of sub-arctic tomatos?

I am curious about them, are they any good?

Are they engineering genetic?

Is it possible to get sub-artic peppers and cucumber plants? I never seen them but thought if you can get sub-artic tamatos then it must be possible somehow.

They are a specific tomato the same as Roma or Gardeners Delight not a generic type and in my opinion totally rubbish. Grew them a few years ago as they were supposed to be very early. They weren't and didn't taste of anything then got blight and died. I won't grow them again as there are 1001 nicer varieties.

What are you wanting re the cucumber and pepper plants? Are you wanting early varieties or ones which are more hardy?

I understand that 'Sub Arctic Plenty' tomatoes are thus called because they will provide a crop in even the coldest British summer when grown outdoors. I grew some last year, but really the flavour was non-existant and the crop quantity was pretty poor compared to other varieties I grew.

Thank goodness I only grew two plants and have three other types as back up. I read about the development of sub-arctic and thought they would be great for our Cumbrian climate. Not so, the Roma and Alicante sowed at the same time are much further on and Gardeners delight, sown later are not far behind.

I wouldn't grow them again either. Nasty, watery flavoured and blight ridden.
There is no sub arctic version of the others you asked about. Sub Arctic Plenty is just the name of that variety.

OOps I have some little ones, which I have grown for the school summer fayre - I picked them cos of their (supposed) ability to cope with cold outdoors.

You could look at hertitage varieties from colder countries?

no taste to them at all,i did grow some black russian and the fruit from that plant tasted quite good,not the best,but not the worst either,loved the dark skin..

I didn't like Black Russian very much, found them quite tasteless which as a disappointment as they'd sounded lovely. Unfortunatly for you I gave the seeds away otherwise you could have had them

It seems like the tamatos that can grow in cold conditions taste bad or not good.
