GYO asks, "what's your favourite tomato?"

Hi everyone,

Would you be able to help me out? Here at GYO we're trying to decide which tomatoes are the tastiest and most fun to grow. We know that many of you will have tried heaps of varieties over the years, and we'd love to hear your favourites.

The friendly people in our IT team have put together a poll with 50 cultivars for you to choose from and placed it to the right of this thread. If you can't spot the tomato you're looking for, just email me at sara.cork@aceville.co.uk and I'll have it added to the list.

It would be great to hear the reason behind your choice – let us know your success stories and we'll edit and publish as many as we can in the August issue.

But, my favourite tomato is the first home grown of the season.

My first alicante of the season tasted amazing a week or so back. I'm also a big fan of 100's and 1000's. They're like a taste explosion in your mouth and also seem to be fairly resistant to blight. I am however trying a load of new (to me) varieties this year so wouldn't want to exclude any I have yet to taste.

I'm still working on it! I've crossed Sungold (because I love the flavour) with a heritage tom called Tiger Tom - again, a good flavour. I'm now growing them out to get an open pollinated wonderfully flavoured tomato whose seeds I never have to buy again.


Ask me again in about 5 years!

I'll be really interested to see the results from this. I love trying new types of Toms every year. Hopefully the winner will be a new one to my greenhouse!

Thanks Liza.. Now I am even more confused. I like a tomato that has depth of flavour and looks enticing. Going back a while UK would import a Canary tom that was compact, dark red in colour, sweet and so full of flavour. It only appeared on the shelves for a few weeks and then it was gone. What on earth was it called?

Oh, that hurt! Picking only one- ouchies! I like to be greedy with tomatoes, (I've got twelve types this year).

Thanks for your comments. It's great to hear so many of you are tomato-fans! Where do you grow your toms? Do you have more luck in a greenhouse or outside, in pots or beds?

I don't eat toms but grow them for Madmax to enjoy - so I have voted for the one he won't let me miss off the growing list - Shirley
