I think I already use this system. I never have a good yield of spuds due to the fact that I lift too early. Mine are container grown so I tip the whole lot out - have a gentle furtle and have another container already prepared to dunk the disturbed tubers into. Stake and water well and hopefully all is not lost.

Thanks for posting this Falkon. I've got a few tubers left over from my planting so I'll be able to try this one. I'll grab some buckets at the weekend.

At the weekend I had to pull up some potatoes due to black leg and the biggest tubers were about the size of a marble so I'm a while away from harvest yet but I'll be pulling a few out from under the growing plants when they get big enough.

You always put a fork through them though
I mulch my spuds with newspapers & grass clippings. Yesterday I rolled up a bit of newspaper and found 6 golf ball size spuds underneath. Took them, replaced the newspaper: no digging required Lush
