red lettuce

Hi

I have seen some really dark red lettuce around. It does not have frilly leaves like lollo rossa, and looks quite thick waxy leaved.
Does anyone know its name, and where I could get some seeds

I recently went to Wisley and in their allotment garden they had two lovely dark red lettuces - one was a dark cos type called Nymans, the other was a batavia type called Rosemoor. They're both available from online suppliers and look really nice.
Do an image search on Google to have a look. They're much darker than a radichio type lettuce and should be ready a lot quicker.

Hi Zazen, Nicos,

So sorry I haven't replied sooner! Bag Gardens are essentially a bag within which you can grow vegetables (out of the top and side of that bag) and are an African technique to grow as much as possible within a small space. It is something that the charity I work for promotes, especially in schools, to raise awareness of South African farming and appreciation of the outdoors.

I don't know if you've found what you were looking for, but the cultivar you describe sounds like Marshalls. It is a very deep red, only a little lighter than beetroot. It is available from most seeds merchants.

A friend of mine is growing red lettuces that exactly match your description. I'm not sure of their proper name but he says they are a red variety of little gem if that helps.
