  • Broad Beans?? Help

    hi

I went to check my broad beans tonight and three of the plants are covered in black eggs on the tops, they go down some of the beans, also there are loads of ants runing up and down the plants.

Is there anything i can do? the beans are nearly ready but i dont want the eggs to spead to the other plants??

Help this is the first time i have grown broad beans.

Sounds like blackfly eggs - just pinch off the top of each plant and that should sort it.

      hi

I have already done that a few weeks ago, if i took off the the bit with the eggs then i would only have half a plant left as the eggs are half way down the plant and on 3-4 beans, all the way down the beans and the beans are about 6-7 inchs long so there are a lot of eggs!!!!!

Have you tried spraying with washing-up liquid in water? (A big squirt to a litre of water) Trouble is ants tend to farm blackfly...

I wash them off with high pressure from the hose. Never had much trouble (mind you I haven't grown many broad beans either)

they aren't eggs, they are blackfly, thousands of them.

You need to catch them early (when there's only hundreds of them). Squish with fingers and rinse off with water. Repeat as necessary
