  • shooting spuds in the cupboard!

    Hi everyone,

I've found some shooting spuds at the back of the cupboard, they are King Edwards and as they are unobtainable here in France thought it might be worth putting them in to grown on.
So 2 questions, is it too late for this, also when I did a google search, it came up that potatoes bought to eat, therefore not seed potatoes, are sterile and will not produce anything other than leaves, is this the case, so any thoughts on this one please.

Plant them as soon as possible - you are a little late, but you will get a crop. I don't know where this sterile potatoes argument comes from. Your potatoes will just be much
    later than normal.

The bottom left corner of the second pic of my post 8/6/10 shows some Asda King Edwards I planted in April, looking ok so far, fingers crossed.

Is that like shooting rats in a barrel?

Some eating potatoes are treated with a compound that is supposed to prevent them from shooting in storage - yours obviously haven't! It's worth growing them I'd say. I almost always use 'propper' seed potatoes so as not to introduce disease to my soil, but I once grew some 'exquisa' that I had forgotten and found were sprouting. Good crop too.

Thanks for your replies, will get them in as soon as possible, the weather here is awful at the moment thats why I'm on the internet looking at this site of course, with a cup of coffee and out of the wind and the rain, when does summer start?

They are talking about shortages in Lancashire too.
Get those rain-collection whatsits set up folks. Don't want to lose crops due to water-use restrictions.

Gees, you had me worried for a mo SC. I thought you was relating to the recent tragedies up there. Taking the thread title into consideration.
