Furtling is something that boys and girls do on the back row of the cimema - and Jeanied's definition fits exactly!!
It is not something a "good" girl would do and so was a rude word that I would have used in front of my Mum.
It is a bit like the word "PETTING".
To me "petting" is when boys and girls fondle each other in a sexual way. Similar to "FURTLE" but "PETTING" does not involve rummaging inside clothing. When people were caught furtling they were euphamistically said to be "HEAVY PETTING".
Again, it's what we did in the back row of the cinema but there used to be signs in every swimming baths that read "NO PETTING".
I was surprised recently to see just how low the morals of this country have dropped when I read the news recently and saw the headline "CHILDREN'S PETTING FARM" - so now we have farms where children can go and freely indulge in... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I was shocked!!!
Now I know that people say that language is a living thing and will change over time but when a word that describes a rude and taboo action in my vocabulary gets used in other ways I do find it hard to adapt.... must be age, I guess!!
If I'd written the disgustingly rude headline that this post has at school I would have been expelled!!!
