  • Sweetcorn in polytunnel?

    Hi everyone,

I have brought on too many sweetcorn and I'm running out of space, but what I have got is some space in the polytunnel, would it grow in there?
It could be planted along the inner space to get as much head height as I can give it, but would there be other problems.
It was my other halfs fault, he said how good last years sweetcorn was and said "lets grow loads", and I did!

    What do you think?

Remember that sweetcorn is wind pollinated. So you will need to tap the plants regularly when the male flowers form at the tip to spread the pollen to the female flowers below. You may not get much of a breeze in a polytunnel.

I've grown it succesfully before in a greenhouse. It grew very tall, but cropped well.
This year I've planted a couple of rows down one side of an old greenhouse that I am in the process of rebuilding. I've mainly got glass panes in the roof up to now and not many more, so wind pollination shouldn't be a problem.
One of the blokes at the allotments had a very good crop in a polytunnel last year, also!

I've grown sweetcorn for a few years in a polytunnel, it does really well. 1st year I planted a bit close to the edge, those closest all hit the roof and bent over, but still croped well! When it is flowering a good shake as you go past seems to work a treat. I've find underplanting with either melon or squash works well too.
