  • Too late for pumpkins from seed?

We've got a large overgrown bed that we're going to strim down then cover with a huge tarpaulin. I wouldn't mind popping some pumpkins through holes in this, but is it too late to raise them from seed, initially in pots in the greenhouse? Would any varieties stand a better chance than others?

It's one of those 'length of piece of string' questions. What it will depend on is the length of summer we get, how warm it is in autumn etc. It's worth a go. You'll only have wasted a few seeds if it doesn't work, and you'll be swimming in pumpkins if it does! Good luck!

Thanks Flum, that sounds like a plan. Homebase have some froggy heirloom seeds in stock (Vif d'Etampes (Cucurbita hybrida)) so I'll pop down there tomorrow and get them started, as you can never have enough squash and pumkin (or onions!).

I planted some really late butternut squashes last year to fill a gap in a raised bed. I forget when I sowed them but they were tiny when they were planted out at the end of July! When the first frosts came, I harvested some very small, but exceedingly delicious butternut squash which I thought was well worth it.

Give it a go. It might not work, but it's probably worth a try!

Worth a try - wishing you pumpkins galore!

Let us know later in the year how they progress, please.
