Plum tomatoes

Hi all
Am new to this forum but know that there are very knowledgable people out there who will more than likely have an answer for me. I have been given some plum tomato plants grown by a friend and they seem to be doing quite well. Do I need to pinch out the side shoots like in other varieties or do I just leave them as they are. I'm also growing them outside against a south facing wall (live in the West Midlands), is this ok or should they be under cover. Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there. Search through the threads there will be loads of info on different ways to grow your toms. But I would expect a plum tomato plant to be indeterminate and so need side shoots removing...but saying that if its determinate...oops! We grow ours in raised beds in the garden, some do better than others. Depending on the weather some varieties might fall to blight more easily than others.

If you like the toms and they're not a hybrid variety (do you know their name?) then you can easily save seeds from the toms & grow them yourself next year.

Am growing plum toms myself outside. They seem to do fine outside and I pinch the side shoots out on mine but I guess it depends what variety they are.

My first post. Hope you all can help. We obtained some seed from an Italian acqaintance who brought them from the old country. She does not however know the proper name for them. They are giant, (up to 24 oz) plums which are very meaty and have few seeds or pulp. If anyone has a clue we would like to know the proper name for them. We have called them 'Marias' for several years, (after the lady we got them from) but have discovered that there is already a variety with that name. Here are some photos.

Lovely toms steelchef
I can see the toms are huge, but what sort of yield are you getting on the plants?
Does bigger fruits mean a smaller yield, over-all?
