I've just been into the polytunnel and whilst examining the aubergines because of holes in their leaves, they seem to be infested with earwigs! Solutions please? Do I just pick them off (yuck) or put an upside down flowerpot with crumpled paper in it to attract them? Will they destroy the flowers?

Earwigs!

Earwigs are a pain in the bum. I really only have problems with them on my dahlias, though. As you said, put a cane in, with an upside down flowerpot on top, filled with straw and they will roost in it overnight. You can remove the whole thing in the morning and relocate or destroy the earwigs.

Upside down pots with straw, grass clippings or newspaper is the way to go. In the morning empty the contents into a bucket of water and your problem is solved.
Every year i have this problem with my dahlias and I find this is the only way to deal with these nasties.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I can remember they were a bit of a pain in amongst my dad's dahlias. He gave me one of the old fahioned oil cans filled with parafin to squirt in the top of the bamboo canes. The earwigs came shooting out. Dad then put a plug of putty in the top of the canes.
Seemed to solve the problem.
