I suppose this is really about seasonal stuff again.
I grew up with 4 apple trees and I ate apples til I was sick of them...and then all this importing from all over the world milarkey started - and anything was available at anytime at a cost- and we just got used to it.

I sometimes have 1/2 lettuce for lunch with a dressing on it and a chunk of bread- at one time I'd of had just a couple of leaves with some meat etc.
I sometimes think you just have to 'knuckle under' and get stuck into a glut. After all it is vertually free nosh- and very, very healthy.

Yup- I agree it's very difficult to judge how many seeds to sow, but sharing plants and produce is a great pleasure when you see people's faces light up.
And yes- we do need to change our eating habits quite a lot to get back to eating seasonally til you start to get fed up with one crop, and look forward to the next.
Oh- yes- and working on our preserving/culinary skills too!

    ...an interesting thread BM!!

From next year, I would deffinately agree with that Womble. There will be plenty of veg that I know will not go to waste no matter how much I grow.

I have found that I am quite good at growing lettuce, (trying to be modest ) and I actually like it, so have now done two plantings! On the other hand I have two swiss chards which are ok, but prefer kale, so wont grow them again.

My DD has had good success with radishes, but all her carrots got eaten by slugs...hope they keep off the pumpkin!

I find by growing a small amount of an awful lot of things that I don't get fed up with anything. Having said that I'm happy to eat the same veg day after day anyway if it's nice (mainly peas, mange tout and cabbage at the moment but was PSB last month ) and fortunately we eat most things. Get through tonnes of salad anyway so struggle to keep up with that on production and most other things can be preserved either as a full meal or just as the veg but do usually end up giving away cucumbers come August time.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
