  • Poppy seeds

I have taken over a smallholding and it has one polytunnel full of self-sown poppies (papaver somniferum). I use a lot of poppy seeds in cooking so does anyone know if these are safe to eat once ripe and dry.

Loads of those at our plot, seems a lot of older people have plenty of them for some reason

Is that all sorts of poppies? I've got the small, yellow flowering one spreading all over my garden. Like a weed. I mgiht feel quite differently about it if I could harvest the seeds.

I've tried to google poppies to see if I can identify what we have. It looks like meconopsis cambrica (welsh poppy).

        Any idea, anyone?

        Thanks

It's only the opium poppy (papaver somniferum) that has edible seeds. You can usually identify it by its distinctive smooth leaves.

Thanks for that. Saves me poisoning myself. Which would be quite inconvenient

According to Alys Fowler, you can eat Opium, somniferum, corn poppy, rhoea, arctic poppy ,nudicale, and all their resulting cultivars. Pretty much everything then!
