Hi, I have some Sweetcorn plants and I am just wondering if anyone has the problem of them getting blown over by the wind. I wasn't sure if I should tie them each to a cane to add support or if anyone had an alternative method. The plants I have are only small at the moment but when I grew them once before the wind knocked them all down just as they where getting to a decent height. Any help and wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

you can do the same as you do with broad beans. Put four poles around the corn, tie string at the middle or top depending on size, say about 3 ft off the ground, should keep them contained. Do it in batches if you've got loads. -
I'd do it slightly differently. I mound mine up as they grow.
As yours are small, dig down 6 inches before you plant them [if you haven't already] and then as they grow you can put soil around them to beef up their resisitance. If you have, then do the poles thing but also mound soil up as they grow to about 6 inches from the soil level.

When I plant mine, I dig nice deep holes and puddle them in. Leave a good depression round each one, which helps with watering to start with. This can then be filled in gradually to help support the corn.Comment

I earth mine up too, they grow roots further up the stem to support themselves and gain greater nutritionComment

I say earth them up and corner pole them for extra support, This year I have put a fence of strong wire mesh around each group of sweetcorn, to keep the badgers out, they love knocking down the stalks to eat the cobs?? out of forty plants grown last year I was left with three

Greedy badgers, not had any problems with wildlife having a go at my veg yet, maybe thier waiting till things have grown a bit first!!
Must be a double edge sword really... great to see badgers but orible to see them eat your produce.
