Planting Peas Now?

Has anyone ever had any success with starting off peas at this time of year?

The seed packet I have of Kelvedon Wonder says sow any time between March and early July. I'm going to give it a go if I can find any space. You do need to use an "early" or fast maturing pea though.

Just the question I was going to ask. The last lot I sower had rubbish germination and what came up has all been munched by slugs!!

Try chitting them on damp kitchen towel and planting/sowing when the shoots show. Is it slugs/snails munching them, or birds?

When sowing peas towards the end of the season make sure you give them plenty of space as one of the problems tends to be mildew. Mildew is more likely to strike if peas are close together and not getting enough air circulation.

Hello - I'm about to plant some more peas this week - Douce Provence - but will be netting them completely to keep the birds off as my earlier sowing of Hurst Green Shaft have been ruined by them (don't mind sharing but not loosing a whole crop!). I think I read somewhere that if you sow an 'early' pea then they will grow and crop in early Autumn (just need some shade from any severe sunshine as they don't like it).

i just sowed some about half a hour ago. i'm doing them in toilet roll tubes so i can just plant out those that germinate and also means i can wait till i lift my onions and put them in there - saves wasted space.

didnt know about the mildew problem with late planting so thanks for that gojiberry

We planted out more Kelvadoon Wonder last weekend.
We've done it before- but they have tended to get canker or some dry mold.
Being in a new region with different soil and weather, we decided to give it another go this year.
Worth a go eh???

Yes I planted kelvedon wonder a few weeks ago . they are about 4ins tall. Last week i planted some more. Showing through ground already.

Definitely ths slugs this time....they left their evil slimey trail all over everything. So few had germinated out of this lot I wasnt that heartbroken though. Might try the chitting thing this time then!

ooh, think I may have a go, mine are pathetic!

Birds don;t seem a problem here, maybe seagulls aren;t great veg fans...

can I still bung some beans in too, slugs and snails have had at least half of mine this year

I'm sowing dwarf kidney (French) beans this week: they are quicker than climbing ones.
