bitter lettuce

    Our lettuce are all shaded by something or other, the main patch is by the side of the house and is also covered with fine mesh - it's beautifully tender. The bigger butterheads are between the broad beans and dwarf french beans, they're much sturdier but not bitter - but then there hasn't been any sun for a couple of weeks and it's still very cool here.

    What varieties are you growing?

      I was always told that bitter crops, swede being another was down to not enough watering, wether that be true or not ?
      Try shading with fleece, it'll keep the main force of the suns rays off the little blighters.
      And possibly any bugs as a bonus.
