My Pentland Javelin were boiled and a couple of skins fell off but most were absolutely fine.

Mine did a lot of that last year.
I found out after that you are supposed to leave them on the soil surface after you dig them up, so that they dry off a bit.
Maybe if you dig them up first when you go to the plot and then carry on with your other jobs leaving them to dry and then pick them up at the end before you go back home/in.
