Hubbard Squash

Anyone know anything about Hubbard Squash?

I think that's what they are - light greenish at the moment, oval-ish round, with bumps around them.

First - what colour are they when ripe? I'm guessing yellow.

Second - are they cooked as other squash?

I'm asking because my daughter tried cooking some yesterday and it didn't work out - I think it may be because they weren't ripe.

OH has grown them here and I've never even seen them before. I'm just calling them Hubbard as that was the conclusion I came through googling.

Depends, there are numerous different colour types. Blue is the traditional one, but then there is also green and golden and other similar type Hubbards like Anna Schwartz and Boston.

It is far too early in the season for them to be ripe. If they are full size Hubbard squash, they will be a long way off.

This Hubbard grew to 24in!

They're winter squash, not summer squash.
This means they have thick skins and will keep through the winter. They aren't ripe until the end of the season usually and then you use them over winter.

Don't bother trying to cook any now, if you want squash in summer next year, grow summer squash instead.
