So I am growing supermarket spuds...

Basically 6 weeks ago found some sprouting spuds in the garage of various varieties. Decided to grow them in a wests+ bag, roll up the sides and add more compost as they grow.

Now flowers opened a week ago and foliage looks like its going yellow down low. This seems like a very fast turn around compared to what I have seen on here.

Could this be because they are a fast variety grown for supermarkets?

What do you think?

There may not be much to harvest down there. When I grow spuds in a tub or sack I water very heavily, especially in the last few weeks (I reckon 12 - 14 weeks for early spuds, probably 18 - 20 for maincrops). If they are dying off then the potatoes won't fill out any more. They were probably short of water.

I had some cara and some saxon sprout under the kitchen sink. They were planted just 12 weeks ago, and I dug a respectable crop yesterday, ready for Kissykit's 18th birthday bash. I didn't intend to bother with spuds this year, pots have not been succesful for me, these were planted directly into the garden, no fuss or bother. I think I might try again next year

I think Flummery is spot on but I would add that with the weather we have had recently the soil in bags and containers has been much hotter than soil in the ground (if that makes sense!!) and puts plants under more stress than they would normally get so they rush to flower and die back.

Lots of water helps to cool the roots.
