  • I need help with pumpkins!

    hi all

i have planted pumpkin plants to close together and i have huge rambling plants which have huge leaves, I have a few pumpkins starting to grow but some have gone yellow and dropped off, i dont know how any sun is going to get on them as the leaves have swamped them. should i cut the plants back??

any advice would be very much appreciated.

Have they grown and then turned yellow and dropped off or did they stay pretty much the same size they were when the flower was out and then dropped off a few days later? If it's the latter then it sounds to me like the fruits that drop off just aren't fertilised.

Try taking open male flowers of and gently inserting them into the open female flowers . Mind you it depends on how many pumpkins yopu want to grow. For decent sized fruit (Halloween faces) it's generally recommended that only 2-3 are left on EACH plant AFTER they've successfully fertilised and started to grow properly.

I wouldn’t go hacking the plant up just yet. If your wanting large pumpkins then ideally you want to keep the sun off the pumpkins anyway as the sun hardens the skin of the fruit prematurely. Keeping the sun off will allow the fruits to swell up nicely. You can always expose them to the sun later when they are nearing maturity for the colour.

If you have enough room you could train the vines away from one another.
