wild field mushrooms

hi all

was walking my dogs today at local playing fields and came across an abundance of what looked exactly like the common white mushrooms from the shops!
they had pink gills and, as i said, looked exactly like supermarket british white mushrooms. does anyone know will it be safe to pick a few? are there any poisonous mushrooms that are similar?
dont want to take any chances lol!

I'd get a second opinion from someone who knows. As a kid on a farm I often went out before breakfast and collected loads from the fields to have with my egg and bacon (both free range and home produced), but then everyone on the farm knew what was safe to eat and would check them first.

I used to go mushrooming years ago and always went along with the idea that if you could peel them then they were mushrooms. Don't know how true that is but always worked for me.

Believe me there's a lot more to it than that as there are so many varieties. We mushroom a lot and can recognise loads but would need a much better description that the one above to be sure If you're interested then get yourself a good book, the River Cottage one is a good starter as it teaches you a basic core of shrooms and you can always build from that later.

did some sniffing around on the net and read that section of the river cottage cookbook. coincidently only cookbook / guidebook ive got!
from what hugh fearnley whittington says - pink gills in july, no yellow bleedin when cut, i really think im onto something here!
feeling pretty confident actually!!! (although not enough to eat any - yet!)
i am going to take some snaps tomorrow and try and post them here.

The yellow staining mushroom looks very similar but has paler gills and will stain when bruised. I knew someone who picked and ate these thinking they were field mushrooms and he was very poorly.

I learned what to look for with my grandmother. We used to pick horse mushrooms, literally the size of dinner plates!
