  • do you incinerate?

I saw this add for a metal bin with holes in the side and a funnel on top:

When I started on my allotment I carefully put all the weeds in one corner, but as time went by I lapsed and just started lots of little ones instead dotted about the plot. It saves hoiking the wheel barrow full up and down and I need as much energy as I can get just clearing the stuff.
So I was thinking of getting one of these and spending some of the autumn burning the heaps. It is mostly horsetail, with some dandelions, and grasses of various forms, not the sort of stuff you would make compost from, thats for sure.

Does anyone here use one of these or anything similar?

I think it's because you've copied and pasted the link text into the box. Try inserting a link instead (the little globe icon with the paperclip under it).

Hi ww, we bought an incinerator last Autumn. Its brilliant for all the twiggy waste we get after pruning the hedges. It does burn for ages though, so be prepared to leave it going all day, or you may need to douse it out before you go home.

            What are you incinerating?

            Someone had to say it!

My incinerator is raised up on bricks/tiles and I have an area around it that is covered in old roofing tiles. Keeps flammables at a safe distance for when the hot ashes fall out of the bottom. I always have a full watering can on standby too - for Justin.

I know Justin's brother, who is never late. I've been thinking about getting one of these for the woody waste on my garden. I think they have some in Wilkinson and I think they are cheaper than B & Q.

We are not allowed to incinerate on the allotment site but we did use one at our last house for burning paper etc. You need to make sure you don't burn on a windy day as the smoke goes everywhere, keep it well away from anything else that can burn e.g. shed, hedge etc, extremely careful if you use something to ignite the paper/wood etc and empty it at regular intervals - if not at each burning. Although some of the above is common sense you'd be quite surprised what can happen when you're in a hurry.

we can't burn at the lottie, but i have one at home, as toastie says dont use it on a windy day but i used it for burning bindweed and other non-compostables (although we've now got a brown bin for council so it goes in there now) i've also used it for disposing of a chook

I use an old Tesco's shoppping trolley to burn all my stuff in, I just drag it to where I want it and then dig in the ash that falls through the bars. I did have one of those galvanised bins but most of the zinc burns off after the first couple of fires and then it just rusts away down at the bottom, especially if you leave it out and the ash gets wet and holds the water. Once the rot sets in, it'll disintegrate in a surprisingly short time. I suppose if you emptied it out and dried it and put it away indoors, it might last, but would you really do that?
