  • Lifted my onions, what next in that bed?

I planted onion sets at the start of April in a 4ft. long x 2ft. wide x 2ft. deep container and lifted them today. I was pleasantly surprised by the results and they are now spaced out on a wire rack in the garage. I think this is the correct thing to do.

What can I plant in that container now i.e. what plants are happy following onions? I have pea seeds although realise it may be too late to be planting seeds. I also have bean, sweetcorn, beetroot, pumpkin and squash seedlings that would happily go into a bigger container. Any of those suitable for following onions? Thanks.

Yikes. I planted some red onion sets in April, and they're looking particularly pathetic. Wouldn't dream of pulling them up yet. Well done for that!

PS think you can still squeeze in some peas?

Sow some spring cabbage in rows and use the thinnings as spring greens leaving one every foot to mature into hearty cabbage!

Totally agree with the above grapes - I follow my onions with brassicas of all sorts!

              Thanks for your replies.

It seems brassicas are the most popular choice for following onions, however I don't have any so I freshened up the soil, removed most of the onion roots and planted bean and sweetcorn seedlings and a row of pea seeds in between them. I hope they're ok following onions.

I felt like the seedlings really had to get out of their pots soon as they've grown big enough and needed to go on to bigger things. I wish I'd waited now though. We had a big thunderstorm this evening and a torrential downpour so don't know if they've survived it or not.
