  • lemon cucumbers rotting before they grow!

My first time growing veg this year. I am so disappointed with the cucumbers, they are rotting at the flower end before they grow more than 1/2". I thought it was damp because I wasn't opening the plastic greenhouse but, it has been open fully for a week now and it's still happening.

I had some courgettes do this last year.

Remove them as soon as you see it, but to be honest I grow in containers so can't comment on the greenhouse thing. Mine got stolen earlier in the year (complete with PLANTED seed trays - GRRR!!!).

Mine recovered on their own and I had a few but nothing like a full crop.

Thanks El Greeno. I have been removing them as I find them.

Anyone else any idea what the problem is?

I've got some but they've only just got started so not sure how they are going to do. I would guess that yours might be a pollination problem, lack of insects in your greenhouse maybe. I'd try shoving a male flower into a female one and see if it helps.

It's possible that the flowers or pollen were damaged while they were too hot? Or maybe the insects weren't getting to the flowers with the door shut? Either way, give them a feed, and try and keep them damp but not soggy and cross your fingers
