  • Giant Onions.

Can anyone tell me any good varieties of onions to grow next season that will produce a good size onion?

I have recently seen some seeds on sale on the net that are apparently a Russian variety that can grow up to a massive size.

This is just a bit of daft aspiration of mine and I am not going to grow to show.

Also any techniques on succesful large onion growing would be very much appreciated.

You need to check out veg man dan's blog.

I manage quite largeish onions, but I grow so many different types....from sets Radar seems to be the biggest [planted in Sept, harvested in June].

If you send for Robinsons seed catalogue there is a page and a half on growing mammoth onions. They sell giant onions in all forms from seeds to specially grown and graded plants.

I grew Kelsae from seed last year and had ok results with the largest one weighing just over a kilo. They didn't keep well at all though and I had to dice them up and freeze them for use later.

I'm going to be a dissenting voice here but big onions are a pain in the bum. There's only three of us in the house and we find that an onion the size of a tennis ball is perfect for most applications. My overwintered ones are averaging about 1lb each which means that they get cut in half and the unused half usually ends up going dry before we need it.

I've grown Robinson's Mammoth Red this year from seed. They haven't been coddled at all, except for a good soak a couple of times in the dry weather and they're doing pretty well.
