  • tobaacco experiment part 3

    don't bother looking for parts 1 & 2

in part one, i was away, son forgot to water them ... they died

in part 2 i planted them out, and it must have been the night of the killer slugs ... cos they ate them all

so to part 3 ... we have tobacco plants ... YAY

i tried a few different methods of starting them off, in the end, putting a couple of seeds on top of compost in a peat pot worked best, the seeds and seedlings are so tiny, it's really hard to transplant them if you use kitchen roll or similar methods.

so i put the peat pots into a propagator, put that on top of the boiler .... closed the door and left them to it .... they were planted at the end of feb,

they take about 2 weeks to sprout, and should be kept damp and warm .... once they sprouted, they were put on the windowsill, and watered occasionally ....

i decided to grow them in the polytunnel, as i didn't have much luck outside.

my tunnel is a bit past its sell by date, due to leaving snow sat on it, so lots of the little plastic squares have fallen out ... but the sides provide shelter, while the top lets in rain

they went into the tunnel about mid april, given a bonemeal feed, and planted into last years chicken run flooring soil ... and some of last years compost, rotavated into the soil in the tunnel.

i've looked at them occasionally and watered them once and sprinkled plenty of slug pellets round .... and currently i have about 20 plants that are around a foot high with massive leaves. ..... it's so very easy, as long as they survive past the couple of inches in height stage, they seem to just be happy left to their own devices.

though looking at them, i wonder, what inspired someone looking at the plant, to think .... i know, i'll roll that up and set fire to it

I suggested to Mr. G. that he grow his own. I just got a dirty look.

Let us know how you get on, then I can nag him! LOL

From what I gather, it's curing the leaves that's a bit hit and miss - keeping the temp and humidity right. But getting them to grow is a major first step

So, it's legal to grow your own baccie, but not distill your own alcohol? You can tell I'm a renegade scot, and my heart is up on the hills with my illicit still

the curing shouldn't be a problem, i have a thermostatically controlled cupboard ... but 3rd year lucky, will get some good leaves so i can at least try and get something smokeable lol if it's any good ... i'll send you all a sample when its done see what you think ...

i'm thinking of how much i'm gonna save lol .... will be like giving up smoking, without having to ...... will get some pics if i can find a camera somewhere, mines in greece on it's holidays

who was the first person to look at a cow and think "i'll squeeze those things and drink whatever comes out" ?????

tobacco is very easy to grow - just follow instructions that come with the seeds - it's that simple - don't try and grow them too early, don't try any wierd and wonderful growing methods - finding that warm spot for them to sprout is very important

use slug pellets a week before planting out, then again when you plant out, then again a week later - i have major slug problems here - my tobacco is potted on in 5" pots then planted out when it's at least 8" tall - i have about 60 plants, not lost any to slugs this year

the weather this year hasn't been good - too cold then too hot and dry - some of my tobacco plants have reached 6', some are only 3'6" - they have all flowered early this year

Distilling alcohol is dangerous as it involves flames and high pressure flammable gas/liquids etc. So it's illegal for safety reasons, rather than because they do not want you making your own vodka. Done wrong it could take out a house

I read that quickly and thought you said horse although if it can take out a house then it can probably take a horse too

I do remember a local vicar growing his own. He used to roughly dry it in his garage and then send it off to a company for curing.

So its got nothing to do with the government losing revenue?

Ahh, so cynical for one so young!!

Does the horse live in the shed?
