don't bother looking for parts 1 & 2
in part one, i was away, son forgot to water them ... they died
in part 2 i planted them out, and it must have been the night of the killer slugs ... cos they ate them all
so to part 3 ... we have tobacco plants ... YAY
i tried a few different methods of starting them off, in the end, putting a couple of seeds on top of compost in a peat pot worked best, the seeds and seedlings are so tiny, it's really hard to transplant them if you use kitchen roll or similar methods.
so i put the peat pots into a propagator, put that on top of the boiler .... closed the door and left them to it .... they were planted at the end of feb,
they take about 2 weeks to sprout, and should be kept damp and warm .... once they sprouted, they were put on the windowsill, and watered occasionally ....
i decided to grow them in the polytunnel, as i didn't have much luck outside.
my tunnel is a bit past its sell by date, due to leaving snow sat on it, so lots of the little plastic squares have fallen out ... but the sides provide shelter, while the top lets in rain
they went into the tunnel about mid april, given a bonemeal feed, and planted into last years chicken run flooring soil ... and some of last years compost, rotavated into the soil in the tunnel.
i've looked at them occasionally and watered them once and sprinkled plenty of slug pellets round .... and currently i have about 20 plants that are around a foot high with massive leaves. ..... it's so very easy, as long as they survive past the couple of inches in height stage, they seem to just be happy left to their own devices.
though looking at them, i wonder, what inspired someone looking at the plant, to think .... i know, i'll roll that up and set fire to it
