  • Celeriac advice, right or wrong?

Have spent today at Tatton show where me and OH had a very nice day with the weather being much nicer than expected.

Anyhows, was having a look at the seeds on the Seeds of Italy stall (rude not to I thought although I was good and didn't buy any ) and overheard the lady on the stall talking about growing celeriac to a punter. Her advice was that if you want decent sized roots then as well as watering plenty you need to remove the outer leaves as they grow. I'm growing it for the first time this year and have never heard this before so wondered if it was true or not. Based on experimentation, I've done this with four of my plants to see how they go but was curious if it was common knowledge or a random myth.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've always removed the outer leaves...I thought that's what you were supposed to do!!!

    No idea why though!!!

..and yup- lots of water...and then some more!

Make sure they are planted in lots of muck-if not- feed well wit a general purpose feed.

I've heard that too, but never remember to do it. This is a brilliant page on celeriac: How to Grow Celeriac - Vegetable Gardener

I've heard it too - but don't know why you're supposed to!
Edit - thanks to TS's link above - it's to develop a 'smooth crown'!!

I water mine heavily and have started to remove the outer leaves, I am not sure why but I read it somewhere?

Edit: I use the outer leaves in soups a fantastic bi product.
