  • Bed size please help

I have been advised that the ideal width for a veg bed is 4ft, but now I am confused when I read on my spouts etc plant 3ft between rows which means they will be growing across the path any help please.

The ideal width for a raise bed is how far you can reach without stepping onto it, as one of the benefits of raised beds is that the ground doesn't get trampled on. If you are growing something with a wider spread then yes it will overhang a bit. The advisory distance between rows is useful for people like me who are inexperienced about spacings and are growing directly into the ground, so we dont plant them too close together and cramp them up too much so they dont get enough growing room or light.

As WW says, if you can comfortably reach 2 foot, then make your beds 4 foot wide. As for me, I can only reach about 1.5 foot due to back issues so if my bed is 4 foot wide, I tend to have a 1 foot gap down the middle as I won't risk over reaching.

The spacings given on seed packets are for guidance only. You can adjust, within reason, to suitable spacings for your beds. In raised beds it is common to use closer spacing as you are not walking in the rows or blocks between plants. Garden Organic catalogue says 60cm(24") between sprouts.

You can also offset so they may only be 2' apart in one line but because they're staggered in the other direction the actual gap can still be 3'. Try and have a play and you'll be fine, it's part of the fun.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
