  • Best tomato I have ever tasted!

I have just harvested my first ripe tomato from some supermarket tomato seeds that I saved.

they are the M&S 'santini' tomato. I took some seeds from the fruit last year and the plants are now healthy and full of tomatoes.

I simply cannot describe how tasty they are! They are, quite simply, so sugary sweet and fresh you could munch through a bag of them instead of sweeties.

    Unbelievable, give them a try!

Last year I sowed seeds from Sunstream tomatoes bought from Tesco. The plants grew well and produced lovely fruit.

I love M&S Santini! How do you prepare the seeds? Isn't there something very complicated with steeping the seeds in water for 3 days?

Thanks for the tip Glasgow. I am yearning for a tasty full flavoured sweet tom. Mine are juicy but sharp this year so I will remember Santini for next year.

I think that applies if you want to clean and keep them for next year. I just scooped mine out of the tomato, gave them a quick rinse and sowed them straight away. 100% germination. I also regularly have tomatoes growing in my home-made compost which is used for mulching.

OH just scrapes the seeds out on to some kitchen roll, and leaves them to dry. Next year, picks off the seeds to sow.

Another variety we have grown from saved seeds is Waitrose, Jack Hawkins. A lovely big beefsteak

I just left the seeds on tissue for a day to dry out then bagged them, sowed a few months later and good results.

I can only say what I do..take a ripe tom - squash it and steep in warm water until it ferments. Give the jar a good shake and the good seed separates and sinks to the bottom. Dry these and keep till next sewing season.

Are they a bush or cordon type, outside or greenhouse/tunnel?

It's even easier to cut off pieces of kitchen roll +seed & plant the whole thing.
Some seeds can be v difficult to get off.

This is an old thread but I came across it for a google search.

This year all my tomatoes have come from supermarket seeds - I have 6 thriving piccolo plants, using seeds saved from a fruit from Tesco last year. They crop like rabbits - highly recommend growing them!

Also got a few 'salad' tomato plants, saved from Moroccan-grown fruit bought from Tesco in February...wasn't expecting them to germinate but they have!

I didn't ferment them - literally scooped them onto some tissue and left to dry before stashing in a spice jar until this spring - 100% germination!

I'm always wanting to try strongly recommended tomatoes - Does anyone have any Santini seeds they can spare? Unfortunately, we don't have an M&S near us any more.

I mentioned recently, Aldi have started selling Piccolo tomatoes, for a lot less than the main supermarkets. They're supposed to be an F! hybrid, but as evie b has had success, I think I'll try them from a bought tomato for next year anyway.

I and others have grown Piccolo from shop fruit - they don't behave like an F1 and appear to come true. Unless there's some invisible difference - disease resistance or something, they seem identical. It's always worth having a go!
