  • Local Varieties

Reading Piglets post about blobby toms has got me thinking..... it happens now and again.

Somewhere on the t'interweb there was a site that you could type in a county and it gave a list of Fruit bushes/trees that were local to it.

Anybody know where it is as I'm buggered if I can find it. I was going to plant a few trees on the lotty & fancied some "local" ones but apart from Warwickshire Drooper ( it's a plum not a condition that requires Viagra) I'm snookered.

The only other one I know of is a variety of Tomato ( strangely) called Kenilworth

Don't know the website, but I am planting some Early Warwick french beans this year. Hopefully I'll be able to save some for planting next year (and passing on to other grapes).

If you can find it Nick I'd like to take a look. I've no idea what is local to hampshire, apart from wild boar and venison!!

But I doubt I'd get away with growing those on the lottie

I know when it comes to planting hedges or native trees you should use 'local' cultivars as they vary slightly from region to region (not so much by county, but there are tons of different 'regions' - i've seen a map!)

I was told this by a customer (grower) who grows native trees and hedging. I don't know where to look on the 'tinterweb but you could maybe call a local knowledgeable nursery who sells them?

I don't know if fruit trees would need to be treated the same? I suspect that as most are grown and then shipped round the country to thier final destination it won't make much difference now, except for personal satisfaction and curiousity of course!
There's vegetable growing in the family, but I must be adopted

Apparently there's an apple tree called a 'Wyken Pippin' which is local to Warwickshire Nick but don't know how easy it is to get hold of. I've tried bought 'Warwickshire Drooper' plum jam & it was lovely & also 'Pershore Purple' but I think that's from the next county along from you!

We're growing Timperley Early Rhubarb, less than 10 miles from Timperley where it was developed!

Wyken (Coventry) pippin are available from a few places but I think the old drooper is a bit of a beast for up the lottie - they've got one at HDRA Ryton and it;s a big un & you can see where the drooper comes from

Pershore is worrcestershire so not too far away.

So far then we've got a plum, apple & a tomato! (I won't mention the sweet peas bred by Bernard Jones in Warwick in case it upsets snadger)
