  • keeping record

Being a little sad, I keep a spreadsheet of what I crop. Because this is my first year with a 'proper' veg garden rather than pots, tubs and growbags my cropping started in May and to date I have harvested almost 40kg (88lb in old money ) that does not include 'single' veg like cues, onions beets. Does include potatoes, carrots, beans, tomatoes, peas, strawberries and tayberries. I am so chuffed and it is a way to show the other half that it is a worthwhile occupation.

Does anyone else keep records like this? I also keep a sporadic journal about what I sow, plant etc.

    Hi Suky,

Yes, we started keeping a balance sheet for the allotments 3 years ago, this years is on the vine here

    http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...0-a_48608.html

Previous years are slo on the vine, if you do a search for Balance Sheet it should come up!

We also keep a journal of sorts, complete with photos of how the plot is looking, have been doing it now for 4 years, and its basically our blog (see the link in my signature)

Its useful to be able to look back at previous years and see how things are growing in comparison, plus a good aide memoire for those of us (like me) who have forgetful leaky brains! Lol!

I do try, but I keep forgetting to make entries. Will do better next year.

This year is the first I've started to keep sowing to harvest records as I've had an appropriate diary - not that its an excuse - haven't got to the weighing bit yet as I'm more concerned with whats worked and not.

For me this year has been peculiar to say the least - have had absolutley no luck with some stuff which should almost grow like weeds - lettuce - and first time projects like runner beans (celebration) have been great and will start to crop next week. Perhaps a record of temps should also be kept?

Think the hot dry start to season has affected many attempts with a fierce winter at the back of it. I've had persoanl distractions - but at least I will get something from my efforts this year and am spurred on to next by the good results!

Apparently Bob Flowerdew has a card index recording system for his garden going back 27 years!

I have a plan of what grew where on my allotment in 1988, then from 1998 to this year, and notes (when I remembered to do them) on what varieties, dates planted/harvested and what did well or not each year. It's very interesting to see how things have altered over the years.
