  • Beetroot advice needed!

    Hi everyone
I'm gonna try growing beetroot again this year and wondered what everyone thought about starting them in modules...
Have only grown straight from the ground but have read about a number of people starting their crops in modules .

Do they still do well? Would peat pots planted directly work too?

    Thanks

Did it for the first time last year. Rinsed the seed first the put one in each cell of a 6 cell half tray. Every one germinated and made it less waste because there was no thining out needed. Also you could see where the seedlings were when you planted them out.

No problem starting beetroot in cells, so long as when you transplant, you take care not to disturb the roots. I did this in my garden quite succesfully last year.
Bear in mind that each beetroot "seed" is actually a cluster of seeds so you may get two or three in each cell - unless you choose one of the newer monogerm varieties.

Yep, we are doing the egg box thing here too! Also going to try an early crop in the greenhouse border, along with some radish, spring onions and lettuce, before we start the toms and chillies in there!

We've never had any problem getting beetroot to grow - sown direct, don't waste compost doing them in cells. We don't waste the thinnings either - the leaves are good in salad, and the guinea pigs eat whatever's leftover

I grow them in tiny modules and plant out when the module is full of root. Its very successfull and by not thining uot you get clumps of different sized beetroot that are ideal for different jobs in the kitchen.
