  • Ripening tomatoes

As usual I've got tomatoes coming out of my ears, all ready to ripen together. Does anyone know how to stagger or get some to ripen earlier than others. I'm getting tired of chutney and pickles!!

Can't really help cos I've got the opposite problem .........my Roma are ripening one at a time and I want a decent amount ripe together to cook with.

One at a time I could handle, but 200 at a time is OTT LOL.

I find by having lots of different types the harvest is staggered somewhat and my polytunnel ones are ready first, then greenhouse and finally outside ones. This year I'm also trying some storage toms from Real Seeds which won't be eaten until after all the others have been finished and am hoping to be able to serve some up at Christmas but not sure if it will work yet - they also need to survive the vandals up the plot who cut the top third off one of the plants the other day

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Andy, why not freeze them and use them to cook with later in the year.
You could also make tomato sauces or tomato soup for the winter.
I do this every year and it keeps really in the freezer. I also freeze whole tomatoes.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Yea, I do all that but would love to be able to eat them fresh as they come. If there's a way to get say a dozen ripe a day, me and the family would have fresh for a month, or am I being to pedantic?

What variety are you growing? Are they bush or cordon?

As Alison says, a mix of varieties usually works, some cherry, some standard, some plum, some beefsteak etc. And cordons usually ripen in stages, where bush tend to ripen more at the same time.

Beef steak, moneymaker and a cherry type I can't remember the name of. They all seem to ripen together even though I staGGERED THE SOWING AND PLANTING OUT.

                    Sorry, all are bush varieties.

Moneymaker will quite happily grow as a cordon/vine type, so if you pinched out all the side shoots, you'd get them ripening in a more staggered fashion.

The other thing is that when a fruit is ripening, it gives off ethylene, which triggers the ripening of the fruit next to it. So you could try taking them off before they're fully ripe, which would slow down the ripening of adjacent fruit. Although that does sort of defeat the object of growing your own Might be worth a try though.

My outside ones are ripening slowly - though most are cordon not bush - but the greenhouse ones are still green (sigh)
Try smaller ones - varieties of cherry or bit larger - more tomatoes on the same plant might give you more time to ripen?
