I have three small cauliflowers battling with some enthusiastic courgettes and pumkins in my overcrowded veg patch. But they're a nasty brown colour. Someone told me this is a boron defficiency. What the hell is boron and are they are a gonner or is there anything I can do?

Cauliflowers turn brown on exposure to sunlight - that is why folding leaves over the curd is advised - I have found that they go rather bitter when they start going brown so have taken to chucking them away...Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

You DID ask?
Cauliflowers usually darken to a pinky colour if exposed to light. I had brown cauliflowers last year and it was caused by slugs & snail activity on the surface. The light problem is easily solved by bending over some of the outer leaves! Stopping slugs and snails is a little more complex! My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

Hmm, well they don't have many leaves - that may be part of the problem. They don't look very tasty at all, I don't think we'll be eating them.
I guess they're just more sensitive to soil deficiencies than other veg - either that or it is a result of overcrowding.
