  • Help! Problem with sweet peppers

    Hi guys,

I seem to have a problem with some of my sweet pepper plants and wondered if you could help me identify the problem and what, if anything, I can do about it, preferably before the problem spreads to the rest of my plants (I have 18 in total and 6 chilli plants).

I have attached 3 pictures which show: dark discolouration on the growing peppers; and yellowing of newly fertilised/just starting to grow fruits. I’d hate to lose the whole crop, if I can avoid it.

    Many thanks

Have looked at your pictures, and can't identify any particular problem. It may be the normal colour for this particular variety. As long as the "discoloration" isn't sunken, brown or mouldy I don't think you have anything to worry about. What variety are they, and have you grown them before?

Hi Reet, like rustylady I don't think they look diseased or anything & maybe that's just the way they develop. The newly developing ones look fairly normal to me but if they drop off whilst still small I wouldn't worry as it could just be poor pollination or a change in temperature which has affected them. The colour on the others will probably change as the fruits grow - to a lighter green & eventually red if you leave them to ripen fully. I'd just keep an eye on them water & feed them carefully & see what happens but they look fine to me.

Reet, are they inside or outside? Like the others said, it might not be a problem at all - not every fertilised fruit will develop because the plant might not cope with them all so it sheds some - like June drop on an apple tree.
But, if they're outside, it's getting chilly at night already up here and the plant might be preparing to ripen whatever fruit it has already and so they might just need a fleece overnight. Keep an eye on the forecast or max/min thermometer for overnight temperatures.

I think there's two different things - the new fruit yellowing and dropping off, could just be caused by their being too much set fruit, or too damp, too cool, etc but (if there's plenty of others growing) nothing to worry about.

The dark 'streaks' on your bigger fruit is perhaps down to too much heat - I've got some (of different varieties) where there is a similar effect on the unripe fruit, again no worries.

My Peppers had that discolouration last year and they were absolutely fine. Not sure about the yellow coloured ones though I am afraid as the other grapes said may just be down to too many peppers on the plant.

All in all they look like happy pepper plants

Oh thankyou everyone, that's a relief. Was dreading the thought of having to bin the whole crop. Will see how things develop.

P.S They were the ones free with GYO a couple of months ago - I forget the variety.

When I bothered growing peppers, mine always had black streaks as well. And some of my chillies. I never worried about it and just ate them regardless. It never seemed to affect the growing of the plant or fruit.

I don't know what causes it. But it's normally only the stuff grown in the greenhouse that has them, so it may be down to too much heat.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I've got some like this, I thought it was because they got caught in the wind. Haven't noticed it on any others. They seem healthy

Mine always go blacky like that. Dont worry about it. The fruit yellowing the ideas ^^ up there are great. Too much fruit or conditions aren't right.
