    Rant...
    I HATE FLEA BEETLES........
They have munched and ruined my rocket, mizuna and radishes....now they have moved onto the next bed and chomped through swede and turnip and now attempting the jungle of cabbage leaves and I have just spotted them on the kale and brown holes on the chard. I HATE FLEA BEETLES......

The next door neighbour has a Buddleja and the CWB are going mad for it....I can't afford enviromesh at the mo so have resorted to a draping of fleece to try to protect the brassicas.....It is not terribly effective but I do get a satisfaction from squashing the eggs and squashing the CWB under the fleece .....

    Querry...
First year this year and I planted some red russian kale and chard white silver. Have discovered that I find kale not really a summer veg for me and the chard is good but again not the first veg I go for for tea. They are both very established and producing well and I am just composting any bits that need using up. Will these plants be okay over the winter if I cloche them or will I need to sow more now for winter use?

    Many thanks.....I feel much better.....

Kale and chard are hardy: no need for cloches

If you had guineapigs or rabbits you could feed the chard and kale to them - they love them.

My baby guinea pigs don't realise that green stuff is actually, like, edible?
They've been raised on biscuits. Well tough: the biscuits have gone away until you start eating some lawn and some weeds!

Rachel, if your kale & chard don't look like lasting till the winter, make it into curries or soups & freeze
