Will my peppers ripen?

Was just wondering if my peppers will actually ripen this year. We havent had that much sunshine. They are in the polytunnel and all plants are healthy and bearing fruit.

This is my first real year growing them (i had 1 plant last year but it didnt survive)

So, will they ripen without the sunshine......I know i will have to just wait and see but maybe one of you lovely people could let me know.

Well you can use them green as soon as they look big enough .....

I will use them green (have tried one of the chillies already and it was hot! )

I guess i just want to see them colour up

I think tho' that if you leave them all on to change colour they might stop producing (I may be wrong )

I tend to nip out the growing tips of the pepper plants at about 4ft high, this will encourage the fruit to mature faster. Although everything seems a bit later this year.

Tomatoking...thanks for that.....i didnt think about pinching out the growing tips.

I think mine are about 3-3.5ft high at the minute......purely a guess though (I am 5.2 FT high so i am sorta measuring them against me


Thats what i will do then. I will also take quite a few off that are big enough and green.

I do tend to string mine up as well , this is last years after quite a few had been picked.

I have mine tied to bamboo canes but after reading some of your other posts and looking at your blog, my tomatoe plants/melons/cucumbers are all strung up. Its a really good idea.


Two sheds i have my plants in B&Q buckets (sorry cant remember the size but they are biggish) I think the bigger the pot, or in the ground, the bigger the plant will be with peppers (hope that is right)

That's easy, you're just growing the wrong type.

Do not forget that I am further south than most of you, so get more light and heat, I have not shaded the polytunnel as I like the extra light on dull days. I get temperatures of over 35 on warm days.
I just damp down a few times a day on really hot days and do not get scorch. I grew in polytunnels in Portugal years ago with temperatures even higher. Peppers and chillies love the heat.
Just keep them well watered and ventilated.

No Womble, they are all in the one polytunnel. I had thought about it but by the time I had got around to get some shading the weather changed.

Like I said, working in Portugal really gave me a good insight as to how plants can take quite high temperatures if you look after them in other ways.
As you can see from my blog, my plants are still very healthy.

I think glass might let more stronger sun rays through though.

Just been out to check mine. Past week, I hit a high of 43C in the GH. My Cayennes are getting large, but just not turning red. My Sweet Pepper (World Beater) are only just flowering? Not expecting anything from them this year
