  • Heavy Tommies

My bush tomatoes seem to be getting so large and heavy that they are splitting the branches and bending the wrong way...is this normal?

Is it game over from the bend onwards or is there a chance they will still r
    ripen?

I tell you, I think I'm going to give up and just grow my little tumbling tommie from now on!!

What variety are they? If they're just bent they should be OK.

Have had a bit of the same problem this year and have made a note to myself to tie them to the support every couple of inches. If need be the trusses can be held up with extra string if need be. I think the answer is to do the tying at an early stage before the tomatoes get to heavy.

Bush tomatoes can do this with a heavy crop, it pays to restrict the amount of trusses on them a little, or to have a few canes pushed in at strategic locations, to support any branches that need it.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I have no idea what variety it is...I know they are not cherry (obviously!) as I got the seed from some kit thing my daughter had.

I think you are all right though, I must have not supported correctly...I tried to stop after 4 trusses had set but perhaps this is too many??

Well how are you sure it is a bush then? I don't like full sized tomato bushes, for the exact reason you have come up against. Every truss will need to be supported separately.
Doesn't matter how many trusses you have stopped it at, that'll make no difference.

One of my tom plants actually got blown off it's supports (it was tied quite well aswell) and snapped then thrown across the garden during yesterdays/last nights heavy wind. Glad i planted several, lets just say i have a number of green ones in a drawer with a friendly banana =p
