  • courgettes help?

I am growing courgettes in pots. I was aware that for successful courgettes there had to be a union of male and female pollens to create courgette babies.

I have 3 rather huge courgettes with female flowers attached but no male flowers open.

As I know nothing about growing veggies and this is my first attempt, is it enough for buds to appear to allow pollenation and successful growing or should I expect my courgettes (currently of sizes with smaller ones in the supermarket) to die off?

Im just a bit confused. These look the part but Ive read about unfertilised courgettes rotting or falling off and I just wondered if thats what these were? I hope ive managed to work out attaching a photo if that helps.

Those look like nice healthy plants you have there jetsmaw, I wouldn't worry too much about the lady flowers. I can see at least 5 courgette on ya plants. Have you got more than 2 plant's in ya pot?

Those all look just how they should be Jetsmaw.
Pick your courgettes when they are the right size for picking - the size you would want to buy them- they may have the remnant of the flower still attached which you will need to remove. If you leave them longer, they tend to turn into marrows!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

        Looking good Jetsmaw.

Its my first courgette year also, but this is pretty much exactly how mine looked when they initially started to come through. Enjoy!

I can see what look like 2 courgettes ready for eating there, they must be being pollinated by something, so just accept it and eat!

            Thank you...

Yes there were two plants in the pot completely by accident. I thought I'd only planted one seed and when I returned there were two shoots. I wasn't confident about removing one so just assumed they'd either die or battle it out. I had something similar happen with two sunflowers from the one seed too.

The flowers fell off so I'm assuming it's time to munch

Do the flowers not actually open out?

They do , but those look big enough to use so I wouldn't worry about it.

                Ah. Thank you!

I'm a complete novice and really making it up as I go along. I've been lucky so far, next year may require knowledge rather than luck

It's very interesting, some of my courgettes will fruit and have flower buds when they are big enough to be eaten, some flowers will have been pollinated and fallen off, some flowers are open fully.
Luck of the draw, one rule for me, if they are big enough to be eaten, eat them
