  • Purple Haze - all purple?

Are purple Haze carrots all purple? Have only pulled one so far (only one really of a 'decent' size) - but it was all purple, and inside say 2-3mm down was orange flesh. I thought they had dashes of purple through them? Do any growing factors affect this? (hopefully they'll all be like this as I really do fancy purple soup ).

I grew Purple Haze last year and they were just like yours. They looked good on a plate, especially sliced up for salad. It was a pity I didn't care much for the taste. Having said that, this year's normal carrots didn't grow much and tasted very slightly bitter.

Your purple haze are normal. I think that they have a very good carrot taste and have grown them for several years.

Yep, they just have a haze or blush of purple over them.

They stay purple if they're steamed (or raw obviously), but if you boil them they tend to go more orange. My colleague insists he has bought some from a greengrocer in the past that were completely purple, but I've yet to find them, all the purple varieties seem to have at least some orange! If you know of any, do let me know!

That's exactly what they're supposed to look like, dark purple round the outside with an orange core - nice nutty taste as I remember from when I've had them in the past. Although they keep good colour when steamed, they do turn the spuds a funny colour if you're boiling them below

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Several years ago, I grew one that was mostly purple right through called Afghan purple from HDRA heritage seeds.

                      cool

We made some soup with most of ours (I still have one planter, that I hope to keep going/semi growing on until xmas in the GH). - Quite a strange colour, almost purpley/browny/orangey - sounds obvious, but I expected the purple to dissapear when boiled.

mine look like that, though they do have slithers of purple that go in further than the ring.

not sure mine are purple haze, might be a different purple variety?
