Disaster Crops 2010

Has anyone else had real problems with a certain crop this year?

My courgettes havent produced a single edible fruit yet, and it lookslike they are going to get dug up and composted. Last year they were prolific and we had far to many, still the other crops have performed well.

Yes, my courgettes have been rubbish too but only the yellow ones. I have put it down to the wrong variety for my soil.

My peas came to nothing just didnt seem to do much at all.

Where do I start?
Broadies - first sowing got killed by the cold winter, second sowing got left too long before picking by yours truly and the blackfly moved in big time
Carrots - all eaten by slugs before they got going
Lettuce - first batch bolted
Radishes - left in too long and went woody
Beetroot - I forgot to sow it
there are a few more disasters that I've forgotten as well...
Now I'm going to sulk.
But I do have courgettes galore.

I picked my first courgette yesterday...enough said!!

Actually- so far I've not been impressed with anything I've grown this year

first thing we planted was also the first(and so far only) thing i had to pull up and get rid of
shallots, lost the lot to what we beleive was white rot but leeks in the same bed are doing fine

who wants courgettes, can't get in the fridge because of them

oh and i nearly listed my chilli's
nothing but a few flowers for ages but now i have 1 plant with 3 on so slowly slowly by the looks of it, they were a bit late going in

Beetroots-I don't know whether it's soil or me-they grow till some point and then stop.
Cukes,toms,peppers,chillies in the greenhouse-brilliant
Lettuce in pots on the table(slugs)-fantastic
Onions-fine but could be better(will put more manure for them next season)
Beans-so-so,but seeds were rubbish and started late due to cold weather.
Tatties-dug up some volunteers-bucket of Desiree and bucket of white tatties(haven't got a clue what they were but taste nice,looks like Charlotte)
Herbs in pots-great
Volunteer broccoli-nice

I've been pleased with most things this year except my toms, most of them have had BER, I put that down to the drip system I used this year for the first time. I had to check it everyday due to blockages so next year I think it's back to the old watering can & trays. Carrots were a no show but have more on the go, forever the optimist......

My carrots were pathetic, doesn't matter where I plant them or the variety they just don't like me. Same goes for chillis and peppers, I ended up having to buy plants as the dozens of seeds I sowed either didn't germinate or got to about an inch tall then then keeled over.

None of my stuff has been very good so far this year, except the courgettes, and I'm overrun with them. Onions pathetic, broad beans nice taste but not much of a crop. Cobra beans again nice but not many of them. Still waiting on the sweetcorn. Tomatoes in the greenhouse doing well but chillies very very slow this year. Might help if the rain would stop and the sun would come out.

Calabrese has been a washout for me this year! Bolting before forming any decent heads!

My courgettes have only just started producing fruits, they seemed to have nothing but male flowers for ages! The tomatoes have been a bit slow too with only a few ripe ones so far but I'm hoping I get some more before the blight/frosts/thunderstorms etc.etc. arrive!

For me this has been a very good year. OK, it was also my first year growing anything but flowers and all in containers so it was a bit of an experiment but I'm certainly pleased with the way its all turned out. Yes there were some which weren't as successful as I had hoped, e.g. pumpkins getting eaten by lice like insects, some beetroot and radishes which had gone woody and a few other things but that was my fault and of course cabbages and sprouts which I grew to feed the cabbage white butterfly larvae, which they seemed to enjoy immensely. I've learned some lessons, especially how many plants to put into a container, how deep the container needs to be and never, ever forget or leave the watering. Its been great fun and at times very perplexing and frustrating when stuff hasn't grown as quick as I thought it should, v(next time I'll read the seed packet to see when to harvest) but its all been worthwhile and I'm looking forward to getting planting at the weekend and planning for next year. ASDA and Morrisons beware, I shall be hounding you soon for more buckets!!!

courgettes - rubbish!
bns - rubbish
bell peppers - rubbish
toms - brilliant also lettuce, peas, melons, chillies, rhubarb, strawberries and spuds did great.
onions - pretty poor
flowers - really pleased with marigolds, geraniums and zinnias this year.
can't grow courgettes at all so not going to try anymore, don't even like them that much lol!!

Sweetcorn! Aaaargh!
This is the third year in a row that it's gone badly, so I'm not wasting precious compost, pots, propagator space and time on it next year... This year, it is absolutely tiny. I planted it out and it just stopped growing! (And it was hardened off for 2 weeks!!) It's now trying to form cobs on plants that are about a foot tall Needless to say, I'm not expecting them to be very big!

Also, red onions from (heat-treated) sets are all tiny - planted just as the dry spell was starting, and I didn't have enough water to do more than water them in once. The roots on them were pathetic when I lifted 'em compared to the brown ones which have over 6 inch long roots.

Butternut squash - still not flowering.

Tomatoes (in greenhouse) still not ripening properly (except Sungold).



On the other hand, we've been swamped with cucumbers
