  • F1 Cucumber with All Female Flower

After the epic failure of cucumbers ( lot of male flowers and a couple of female flowers only) this year. I want to try the variety with female flowers only for next year.. Does anybody have any experience with these and which variety is good...

I only ever use all female cucs. I tend to grow the mini varieties as I don't have a greenhouse or a big garden. My favourite is cucino which has proven to be a reliable cropper.

Any of the F1 all female varieties will be good, just decide what size cucumber you want and then go for them. They are expensive though, usually about a £1 per seed. And they are just as susceptible to rotting off or being eaten by slugs.

Gojiberry said exactly what I was going to. Better than growing from seed, if you only need one or two plants, is to buy them at a garden centre when they're about 9" high. That way you can see which is a good strong plant and you don't have to pay the earth for seeds you won't be using. I do this as I'm the only one here who eats cucumbers and one plant is enough. (Just cut no.6 and still 3 more ready and 6 more coming!)

thanks for the advice, I will ask the garden centre around about the all female varieties that if they keep it or plan to keep it next year. But here in Denmark one cucumber plant from garden-centre cost around 3 pounds, I guess I can get 5 seeds for under 2.5 pounds. but let see what happens when the time comes

Large cukes - Femspot, Pepinex 69 or Carmen
Middle sized cukes - Passandra takes some beating
Mini Cukes - Iznik for bite size - okay two bites
